In article number 2100315 by Robert L. Mauck and co-workers, a hyaluronic acid (HA) system is used to modify the surface of damaged cartilage. This interdigitating microenvironment enhances the multi-scale mechanics of degenerated cartilage, restoring the response of chondrocytes within. This modified tissue surface can then be used to improve the adhesion and behavior of stem cells, providing a route to “seal” cartilage defects. Together, this combined reinforcement and sealing may present an innovative therapy for the treatment of damaged cartilage.
